Sutton Coldfield RFC 10 Leek RFC 52

Leek travelled to Sutton Coldfield for the first time since 1992 for their 2nd away league fixture of the season. Head coach Joel Booth was forced to make changes from last week's win, Lee Williams returned to the front row, joining Eddie Cheadle and Joe Newton Taylor. Jacob Armstrong-Bainbridge switched to lock partnering Joel Booth. Sam Lloyd made his first start of the campaign at flanker with Billy Kidd and George Hunt moved to No8. Dan Needham also made his first start of the season at scrum half with Will Midwinter at fly half. Rob McDermott and Josh Nadin were the centers. Joe Byrne was full back with Sam Brereton & Jack Newton Taylor on the wings. Will Hill, Tom Fairhurst and Jack Fryer were the substitutes.

In bright breezy conditions Leek played into the wind for the 1st half receiving Sutton Coldfield's kick off. In the 1st minutes the home side SC were awarded a penalty on the Leek 22 for the tackler not rolling away. The kick was missed and play resumed with the visitors repeatedly pushing SC back deep in there own half, Leek were dominating possession and territory. On 20 minutes a Leek lineout on the SC 22mtr line gave the visitors the opportunity to use their backline, McDermott timed his pass to perfection allowing Josh Nadin to collect, his hard line run piercing the SC defence, the youngster scored his 1st senior try under the posts. Midwinter kicked the conversion 0-7.

29 minutes Sam Lloyd broke clear with a powerful run stretching the SC defence and winning a penalty that Rob McDermott duly kicked into touch 10mtrs from the SC try line. From the lineout a maul was formed which the Leek packed rolled and drove over the line for Jacob Armstrong-Bainbridge to score the 1st try. Midwinter missed the conversion 0-12.

Just two minutes later Joe Byrne fielded a kick in his own half, he raced forward beating two defenders before passing inside to Jack Newton Taylor who turned the last man in defence inside out with a weaving run, culminating in a try under the posts, Midwinter kicked the conversion 0-19.

The home side now began to venture into the Leek half but a knock on gave possession back to Leek. On 37 minutes, as the visitors pushed forward Byrne executed a chip over the defence which he collected then offloaded to wing Brereton who was judged to have been high tackled earning the visitors a penalty. Leek elected to to take the scrum two phases later Joe Newton Taylor powered over the try line to score the Moorlander's fourth try earning them the bonus point before half time, the conversion was missed 0-24.

SC now began to fight back penning Leek back in their own half winning a penalty just outside the 22mtr line, which the full back kicked half time score 3-24.

Buoyed by their bright finish to the first half SC began the second period full of vigour having the lions share of territory, on 45 minutes their full back sprinted at the Leek defence beating the first two men then in the next phase of play the fly half ran a diagonal line outsprinting the defence to score, the full back kicked the conversion 10-24.

The match was becoming a more even contest when on 54 minutes Sam Brereton and the SC full back were both shown yellow cards for their part in a melee after a late tackle on Leek captain Eddie Cheadle. The sin binning spurred the boys in blue back into action as Joe Byrne collected a grubber kick in his own half, he sprinted through a hand full of the opposition to score a brilliant solo try, Midwinter added the conversion 10-31.

On 65 minutes SC moved up to the visitors try line but they could not break through the organised defence even when Leek received a second yellow card as Lee Williams was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle. The blue defensive line held firm for the next 5 minutes and as the ball was turned over and cleared upfield a second yellow card was shown to one of the SC props for foul play.

With both sides down to 14 men Leek coped better with the space available. Jack Fryer scored in the corner following a long double miss pass from Midwinter who also kicked the conversion 10-38.

After 82 minutes from his own try line Sam Brereton chase a clearance kick which he fly hacked toward the SC try line, he was narrowly beaten to the ball by the SC winger who collected the ball in his own try box. The SC winger tried to run the ball out, only to be tackled over the dead ball line by Brereton, earning Leek a 5mtr attacking scrum. The Leek pack retained possession and the ball was spun down the blind side with Midwinter offloading the ball out of the back for Brereton to collect and score Leek's 7th try, Midwinter kicked the conversion 10-45.

The final score of the match also went to the visitors on 84 minutes as Leek's midfield scrum was worked out wide to Byrne who broke down the left, from the next phase the ball was worked wide through the backline with McDermott delivering the final pass to Midwinter who skirted the opposition to round off the scoring he added the conversion to give a final score 10-52.

Leeks 3rd straight win of the season sees them 3rd in the table on 13 points with Melbourne 2nd (14 points) and Long Eaton top (on 15 points). Next Saturday 24th Leek travel to Leicester Forest for a second consecutive away game before hosting Long Eaton at EsterChem Park on the 1st October. The 2nd XV are at home, hoping to maintain their current spot at the top of the table against Bowden on the 24th September.
